as lecturer,
the main job descriptions are to teach, to research, and to serve (to the society). those are the ideal condition. but in my country, it is not easy to do that job description.
i will give you a simple in research. to do research, lecturers have to find the fund by themselves. sometimes the focus of lecturers is not: how to do the research well. the lecturers have to think: how to get the fund. how to make the “proper” financial reports.
the word “research” is also absurd here. sometimes what we call research is a project with big amount of money. lecturers just need to do a “low level” research to get big amount of money. the one who think that money is much more important than the research itself, will find another project like this.
i have also involved in a project like this. and honestly, it always strikes my head. it is far away from the lecturers’ main job description. and you know, the project itself hasn’t ended yet! it has been 6 months.
but this morning, the head of the department call me to his room. and he told me about the finalization of the project (it made me pleased). and he told me also to prepare the materials for his lectures (with my pleasure), and help him to write a text book (yap, i will).
always strive to go back to main job description. even still need to learn a lot.

in my opinion, thing’s called research in our department… it’s working like a consultant…
if a company have a trouble, then they call us to analyze the problem..
what do you think.

@gregmarindra
i think it’s not a “research”, but a “service”…
researches try to find something new, optimize things, or repair things scientifically…
@fikri
maybe TE UGM needs to build a department store or something to fund researches? :p

it can be.. there must be some “enterpreneur department”..
some of big university in indonesia do this thing. the “enterpreneur department” find the money to pay the researcher and the lecturer more.. so that they can concentrate in researching and giving lecture.

well..many things can be done for TE UGM I think…
I read Computer Science Dept UI’s website once and found out that they have an agreement with Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal) and TU Dresden (Germany) to encourage researches and also staff exchange in one subfield of study. I believe TE UGM can do the similar thing, provided it has good labs and research environment.
I think Mr Tumiran said that he had an idea of rearranging labs and requireing final year undergrad students to register and do their thesis in certain lab. I wonder that it will be realized.
Vote Fikri for Head of TE UGM!
)
(Do you desire to be in that position?)
Btw I still keep a campaign SMS for your candidacy as Head of KMTE

it can be. but the lab’s activity here still poor.. very very poor..
about mr. tumiran’s idea, that’s right (i hope). next semester, some of class activity will be moved to sekip (it was faculty of agriculture). so, the existing classes will be rearranged as laboratory. hope that lab’s activities will be boosted.
vote me as head of electrical engineering?
i thing it’s still long way to go. but now, i don’t have desire for it (because hard to do research when you’re in a structural position)
wa.. you still keep the campaign? what an honour!!
